Privacy Policy

Updated September 27, 2019

Your privacy is important to us. To better protect your privacy we provide this notice explaining our information practices and the choices you can make about the way your information is collected and used when you install the Cardinal Chrome extension (the “Extension”).

Permissions Overview

Identity

We use this permission to allow users to log into Google Sheets to collaborate and to access Getty Images. The Google Sheets API is used to sync with “Programming Notes” in the staff menu, and the Getty Images API is used when a user clicks the “Add to your Atlas Library” button overlay on any Getty photo page.

Cookies

We use cookies to get tokens associated with the user through our internal Atlas tool. These Atlas user tokens are used to access internal Dotdash APIs and associate the actions you take with your account.

Storage

We use storage to persist your identity information and preferences.

Tabs

We use tab permissions to send and receive messages within the extension to handle events, as well as executing content scripts. Messages convey actions across different parts of the extension and allow logic to flow between different content scripts on the page. Content scripts are the building blocks of the extension, processing user inputs and modifying the tab the user is on, an example being the button overlay.

The Information We Collect & How We Use It

This notice applies to all information collected in any way when you have the Extension installed.

Information you choose to provide in Cardinal’s “Extension Options” includes various pieces of information related to your writing, editing, or other content production activities on Dotdash properties. The only personally identifying information that you can manually enter here is your “Expert Author ID” and this information is never used to track your activity with the Extension nor is it shared with anyone. The only use is internal to Cardinal and serves to allow image importing from Getty.com to your Dotdash CMS via the “Getty 1-Click Import” function.

Some features of the Extension require connecting with your personal Google Account to allow reading and writing information from and to a specific Google Sheet. This feature is limited to Dotdash staff. The only use of this information is to pass your name through to the proper row in the Google Sheet. This Google Sheet is private and used inside Dotdash only – none of your information is shared publicly or stored by the Extension or anywhere else. The “Content for Programming” modal that appears when using this feature clearly links to this sheet.

All other permissions required to install Cardinal are used only to inject the overlay buttons on your Dotdash content which is the reason you install the Extension.

Our Commitment To Data Security:

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we pass through the Extension.
